Robert D. Liebenow
Robert D. Liebenow joined the U.S. Navy in 1966. He was attached to Attack Squadron VA 163 out of Lemoore, Calif., and spent more than seven months aboard the USS Hancock off the coast of Vietnam. Liebenow was honorably separated in 1969 as a petty officer third class.
Liebenow has been a member of The American Legion Department of Oregon since 1972. He is a member of Hillsboro Post 6 where he has served as vice commander, commander, finance officer and adjutant. Currently he is the membership chairman.
Liebenow was appointed District 1 adjutant in 1988, elected vice commander in 1989 and commander in 1990. Under his leadership, District 1 was at 108 percent of membership.
He was elected department vice commander in 1995 and commander in 1996. He also served as department finance officer from 1998 until 2002. At the national level, Liebenow has served on the Americanism Council, Counter Subversive Activities Committee, Children and Youth Commission and Veterans Employment and Education Council. He was elected Alternate NEC in 2013 and replaced Charles Schmidt as NEC in 2016 when Schmidt was elected national commander. Liebenow served as a member of the NEC Liaison Committee to the Convention Commission and two years on the NEC Liaison Committee for the Marketing Commission. He also served two years on the Resolution Subcommittee.
Liebenow and his wife Linda, a past department Auxiliary president currently serving as department secretary, have two children and three grandchildren.
